Anthem, a post launch review

Greetings,

Having the game release about 6 days not including the origin access (7 days earlier ) release. It's time to do a post launch Anthem review.

First of the bat is that the origin access is a somewhat a bad more for Anthem, and I mean it's just bad marketing. Having to spend more to have an early 7 days access is just too cruel for those who have pre order the game months before the release. Don't do it.

Now on to the story of the game since is bioware, used to be one of the best storytelling game developers out there, USED to be. Anthem does have a decent story to boot with decent voice acting but it fails to deliver the rich lore and story of the game, as if the screenplay is terribly written. Surely this is a mistake from one of the best storytelling game developers right?

But credit is due that, there is some decent effort put in, compare to the other AAA titles out there. Not to delve into the story. There are parts of the story does not make any connection. It felt a little forceful and sloppy. Still better then destiny as the only redemption for Anthem is that your character has a voice that interact with the world around them.

Next moving to the core gameplay. Anthem is a looter shooter like destiny but more importantly it's a mixture of diablo 3 with guns, with the concept of having an iron man style mech suit. Great concept but could be better, having access to 4 unique different class is a good classic RPG format that most shooter is lacking, my gold standard for this is borderlands where currently is the perfect example for these type of RPG shooter. Anthem does provide me with this but somewhat lacking of more customisation or RPGness coming from the developers of dragon age and mass effect.

So after finishing the story, the game slows down quite a bit leaving very little motivation to continue other then grinding out your character level, felt like something is missing.

Sadly I could not pin point it. Maybe the variation of quest? Not enough side quest? Or the mindless wild goose chase ? This requires more game play to identify. One of the biggest problems not just for Anthem but for other games out there as well.

Overall Anthem is a decent game, with fresh style of a shooter, flying around is currently one of the unique perk of this game but it's very under utilised to its full potential. Also for the love of bioware , get better in your story screen play. You have one of the best headstart in terms of story right now.
